All international F-1 students are eligible to work on-campus immediately after they have been issued their UNLV “Continued Attendance” I-20 (issued after checking in to International Student and Scholar Services with an I-94, passport, F-1 visa, local address, and local phone number).
During the regular fall and spring semesters, F-1 students are limited to 20 hours per week on-campus. During the winter and summer breaks, F-1 students are allowed to work up to full-time (21-40 hours per week) on-campus with permission from their supervisor.
Students must be enrolled full-time (12 credits for undergraduates/9 credits for graduates/6 credits for graduate assistants) at the time of employment or the next regular semester if requesting work authorization during the summer or winter breaks. However, please note that graduate assistants (GAs) working during the summer must enroll in at least one graduate credit during Summer Session I, II, or III in order to remain in “student status” for payroll tax purposes.
All students working on-campus must also have a Social Security Number (SSN). All earnings must be reported to the IRS. Students applying for an SSN must complete the Evidence of On-Campus Employment Letter to apply for the Social Security Number with their On-Campus Supervisor. Please note that you cannot apply with the Social Security Administration until you have received your Continued Attendance I-20 from ISSS and have been in the U.S. for at least 10 days. Please note that if you have requested an I-94 correction, you should wait until 10 days after the correction has been approved before going to the Social Security Administration.
If you are a Graduate Assistant, then you will need to begin the process of obtaining an SSN by logging into your Grad Rebel Gateway and submitting the "Graduate Assistant Evidence of On-Campus Employment Form" request in the Gateway. Once submitted, the Graduate College will send the completed letter to ISSS for processing.
If you are not receiving a Graduate Assistantship position at UNLV, then you will need to download the "Evidence of On-Campus Employment Letter here and complete Part 1. You will then need to send it to your hiring manager/supervisor for them to complete Part 2. Once both Part 1 and Part 2 are completed, please upload the document to the Evidence of On-Campus Employment Letter Request in the OISS Portal and click submit so that your ISSS Advisor can complete Part 3.
