Description

This webinar will feature two presentations, with 30 minutes allotted for each presentation.

Presentation 1:  Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training (RCNET) Workforce Pipelines

Presented by Kevin Cooper, RCNET and Ben Reid, Impact Allies

The presentation summarizes RCNET's work and lessons learned since 2008 in developing skilled technical workforce pipelines for the nuclear energy industry in collaboration with community and technical colleges and nuclear agencies.  Specifically, the focus will be on industry recognized certifications, reducing unnecessary barriers to student/workforce entry, increasing academic and career pathways for students and technicians across nuclear STEM fields, and designing programs that are not-boutique so as to be sustainable.

Presentation 2: Task 1: Meta-Analysis Overview of SUSTAIN: Supporting Strategic Training of Adaptable and Integrated Nuclear Workforce

Presented by Jaewon Lim, Public Policy and Leadership, University of Nevada, Las Vegas

The SUSTAIN (SUpporting Strategic Training of Adaptable and Integrated Nuclear Workforce) project is a collaborative effort between the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, Morgan State University, University of Maryland, the Regional Center for Nuclear Education and Training, and NuScale. The project objective is to develop a comprehensive and actionable plan for ensuring that a diverse pool of skilled workers is available to support the continued viability of nuclear power generation in the United States. This will be achieved through an evaluation and lessons learned from previous workforce assessments, outreach to those in workforce supply, demand, and training, using the outreach to project future workforce needs, and development of content for training the future workforce. The project has four tasks.

  • Task 1 will integrate insights and lessons learned from existing nuclear and support sectors workforce evaluations.
  • Task 2 uses strategic engagement to identify workforce, factors influencing the workforce, and how educational institutions can assist in workforce development.
  • Task 3 performs an integrated assessment to understand the current state of the nuclear industry.
  • Task 4 translates insights from the gap analysis into actionable content for engaging a diverse pool of workers.

The SUSTAIN project has recently completed its first year. The presentation provides an update and a means for the broader community to engage SUSTAIN.  The outcomes and results from Task 1 will be presented.
