Description
The Brookings Mountain West invites you to attend a lecture titled, The New 100 Years War? Causes of Regional Instability and the Rise of the Islamic State given by John R. Allen, General, USMC (Ret.), Brookings Scholar.
The region traditionally known as the Muslim Tier, stretching from the North African Atlantic Coast, across the North Africa and the African Sahel, through the Middle East and through Central and South Asia to South East Asia, is experiencing unparalleled instability. This lecture and associated presentations and conversations will seek to identify the underlying causal factors that have created such widespread radicalization, and the rise of extremist elements and groups like Al Qaeda and the so-called Islamic State. Allen's lecture will explore short, mid, and long-term approaches to deal with the security challenges of extremism and extremist groups, and the ways and means of countering violent extremism over time to prevent the region’s continued decline into chaos.
