In this talk, Jesse Owen will present on the use of the multicultural orientation framework (MCO), which includes three pillars: (a) cultural humility, (b) cultural opportunities, and (c) cultural comfort. He will review some of the foundational theoretical and empirical work supporting MCO. There are currently studies examining tens of thousands of clients and thousands of trainees’ perspectives about their therapists/supervisors MCO. The lessons from these studies will inform the presentation. More specifically, Owen will also present videos and other interactive tools to help enhance providers’ MCO approaches in therapy and supervision. This interactive presentation will engage the audience through self-awareness and skill building opportunities.
Jesse Owen is a Professor and Distinguished Scholar in the Counseling Psychology Department at the University of Denver. He is a licensed psychologist with clinical specializations include multicultural cultural orientation, therapist expertise, and couple therapy. He holds various positions including lead psychologist at Lifelong, Inc; Research Director for CelestHealth; Senior Research Advisor for SonderMind; Editor for Psychotherapy. He has co-authored three books: Mindfulness-based practices in therapy: A Cultural Humility Approach; Therapists’ Cultural Humility; and Research Design in Counseling. He also has over 205 publications/book chapters. His research has been supported by foundations, federal agencies, and private companies (e.g., John Templeton Foundation, NIMH, DHHS-ACF, and SonderMind).

The Community Talks series provides researchers, practitioners, families, and community stakeholders learning opportunities to increase their understanding and ability to apply knowledge related to language development for multilingual populations in their respective settings. An attendance certificate will be provided at the end of each session.
These community talks on multilingualism and assessment issues are sponsored by Sharolyn D. Pollard-Durodola, professor and Dunn Family Endowed Chair of Educational Assessment.
