Description
We have seen firsthand how the pandemic has changed the urban landscape across the world including Las Vegas. From the onset our cities and counties experienced a burst of entrepreneurial spirit and activity as we acclimated to our new reality. Some 6,340 new small businesses (under 500 employees) were created right here in Nevada since the initial stages of the pandemic. Much of this activity took place in urban environments where the concentration of commerce, skills, and mobility was the greatest and once restrictions eased, where people wanted to get back to.
Yet our urban communities have experienced unprecedented challenges such as the slow return of the nine-to-five workforce which has increased office vacancies, housing affordability and the increase in the unhoused population, public safety, and in some cases the shuttering of large brick and mortar retail. Despite these challenges, our cities, counties, and growing neighborhoods have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to redevelop, redefine, and experiment due to investments and programs coming from the federal government, record local sales tax revenue, and stubbornly strong housing prices.
What does this all mean for Southern Nevada, our state, and our role in the global economy? Find out on November 7 at our 2023 Fall Outlook.
