Cannabis in Indian Country

Description

The cannabis industry in Indian Country is experiencing significant growth and opportunity, with several Native American tribes leading the way in cannabis cultivation and retail. Tribes have leveraged their sovereign status to establish cannabis businesses, navigating both legal and regulatory challenges unique to tribal lands. While some tribes embrace cannabis as a potential economic driver, others remain cautious due to federal law conflicts and concerns about public perception.

The Indian Nations Gaming & Governance Program welcomes Riana Durrett (Suquamish), Director of the Cannabis Law and Policy Institute at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; Kostan Lathouris (Chemehuevi), Chief Judge of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribal Court and the Duckwater Shoshone Tribal Court; and Dave Colvin, General Counsel of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe, to discuss the cannabis industry in Indian Country.
