Description

In its 19th year, the U.S. war in Afghanistan is the longest war in U.S. history. Both the Obama and Trump administrations repeatedly sought to bring U.S. troops home. Barring a precipitous Syria-like U.S. withdrawal before the U.S. presidential November 2020 elections, such an outcome appears increasingly unlikely. In the absence of an intra-Afghan-Taliban government, a precipitous U.S. withdrawal could trigger another civil war. What are the prospects for Afghanistan and various scenarios of negotiations and political development? What are the consequences for the United States and what interests in Afghanistan does the United States still retain? Vanda Felbab-Brown will analyze these questions and brief us on her latest trip to Afghanistan in October 2019.
