Description
A Film Screening & Conversation with George Lee and Filmmaker Jennifer Lin
Join us for Beyond the Archives: Ten Times Better, an evening celebrating the extraordinary life of George Lee—a war refugee from Shanghai who broke barriers in ballet before embarking on a second, decades-long career in Las Vegas casinos. This special screening of Ten Times Better, a documentary by Jennifer Lin, tells the inspiring story of a forgotten AAPI pioneer whose mother’s warning—that he had to be “ten times better” to succeed in white America—became his lifelong mantra.
Following the screening, George Lee and filmmaker Jennifer Lin will join us for an intimate discussion about the film, his journey through the worlds of dance and gaming, and the importance of preserving stories like his in the UNLV University Libraries' Special Collections & Archives.
Co-hosted by UNLV University Libraries and the Asian and Asian-American Studies program in the Department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies, this event dives deeper into the rich histories preserved in Special Collections & Archives. George Lee’s oral history is part of Reflections: The Las Vegas Asian American and Pacific Islander Oral History Project.
Light refreshments will be provided.
