Abstract

In this presentation, I will provide an overview of my research project on the animal protection movement in Mexico. In recent years, Mexico has seen an increase in the number of organizations and individuals that engage in actions and discourses against violence against animals. This can be seen on social media, traditional media, and inside formal politics. The increasing visibility of this movement aligns with the rise in anti-violence and anti-impunity social mobilizations and protests, such as the movement against the effects of the “war on drugs.” In this overview, I will discuss some of the linkages between this wide array of social movements, but I will mainly focus on the increasing demands for punitive measures as solutions and in how non-human animals become de/politicized. The material analyzed is based on fieldwork in Ciudad Juarez and on social media.
