The School of Nursing's Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program is designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills, and abilities requisite to the safe, effective, and efficient advanced practice of nursing. The online MSN program uses a variety of teaching strategies designed to actively engage students. Two-day orientation sessions are held on campus before the beginning of each fall semester to enhance the connections among students and with the nursing faculty.

The family nurse practitioner track prepares graduates to:
- Work as a nurse practitioner in a variety of settings.
- Collect health histories and perform physical examinations.
- Order and interpret diagnostic tests.
- Diagnose and manage acute and chronic diseases.
- Prescribe medication and treatments.
- Refer to specialists as necessary.
- Provide patient and family counseling, and education regarding lifestyle behaviors.
- Participate in research projects and integrate research findings.
Students have part-time or full-time enrollment options. There are mandatory on-campus sessions per each track. For the MSN-FNP, students are required to come to campus each semester for a total of 7 visits: (1) Orientation, (2) NURS 703 skills lab, (3) NURS 703 final skills pass off, (4) NURS 740R Inter-Professional Education workshop, (5) NURS 740R final OSCE pass off and NURS 750R prep and skills day, (6) NURS 750R final OSCE pass off and NURS 760R skills day, (7) NURS 760R final OSCE pass off and NURS 761 student presentation of their scholarship/culminating experience.
The MSN curriculum meets the Essentials of Master's Education in Nursing as identified by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing.

APRN Student Clinical Placement Information
UNLV School of Nursing guarantees clinical placements in Nevada in the greater Las Vegas Metro area to students who hold a valid Nevada RN license. Out-of-state students located in Alaska, Montana, North Carolina, Oklahoma, or Utah must hold a valid RN license in the state and jurisdiction in which they intend to complete their program. Students are encouraged to partner with the School of Nursing in identifying potential preceptors and clinical practice experiences in their local community in one of those states. The UNLV School of Nursing must review and approve all out-of-state and out of the Las Vegas metro area preceptors and clinical sites. UNLV ensures adequate physical resources and clinical sites are available in Nevada to achieve the program's mission, goals, and expected outcomes for all admitted students. UNLV strives to approve student recommended out-of-state/out of the Las Vegas Metro area quality clinical practice experiences and preceptors; however, UNLV offers no guarantees for out-of-state/out of the Las Vegas metro area clinical placements and preceptors and/or assistance in finding out-of- state/out of the Las Vegas metro area placement sites and preceptors. If an out-of-state/out of the Las Vegas metro area student is unable to secure a UNLV approved preceptor and/or site in his/her home community (Alaska, Montana, North Carolina, Oklahoma or Utah), the student is expected to acquire a Nevada RN license, relocate to the greater Las Vegas metro area, and the UNLV School of Nursing will assign him/her a preceptor and clinical site in the Las Vegas area (up to 75-miles from UNLV within NV state lines).

Career Possibilities
The MSN program builds on the education of a clinical practice generalist and prepares an advanced practice nurse. The educational experience prepares students to validate and expand research findings through application of theory and scientific inquiry.
Workplace
Graduates are expected to function collaboratively and independently in an advanced practice role with various populations and primary care settings.
