The Geology minor is designed for students in a variety of fields who desire a scientific understanding of the planet Earth, including earth materials and processes, and the history of the planet and its life. The minor consist of 23 credits of geography and geology classes. The minor may be particularly relevant to majors including education, archeology, environmental studies, engineering, and other majors including those within the Colleges of Sciences, Education, Liberal Arts, Business, and Engineering.

Learning Outcomes
- Acquire a solid understanding of the field of Geology and will be able to apply scientific reasoning to a variety of geological topics.
- Be able to apply geological principles to solve geologic problems relating to natural hazards or resource availability.
- Gain a thorough understanding of the evidence for Earth's geologic and life history.
Career Possibilities
Students who complete the Minor in Geology may be suited for entry-level jobs in environmental consulting, energy exploration, mining, state or federal government agencies. The completion of a Geology Minor with a different Major can be a very powerful combination, and the career opportunities can range from field-oriented work, where geologists collect soil, water and rock samples for lab analysis and mapping, to highly specialized work depending on the Major. The combination of an Elementary or Secondary Education Major with a Geology minor can be highly desirable for teaching science at the K-12 level.

Geoscience is an all-encompassing term used to refer to the earth sciences. The Department of Geosciences offers programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels where students can learn about topics such as earth processes; the origin and evolution of our planet; the chemical and physical properties of minerals, rocks, and fluids; the structure of our mobile crust; the history of life; and the human adaptation to earthquakes, volcanoes, landslides, and floods.
