Connecting and speaking to many law enforcement workers, such as detectives, dispatch, lieutenants, sergeants, and admins, was great! Especially hearing about their experiences and unique stories was another favorite aspect of my internship. “My time at the Coroner’s office started off slow but it picked up quick and was the most practice I ever had with my forensics knowledge. I had the amazing opportunity to work with Clemson University in developing a more robust Estimated Time of Death in which I looked through hundreds of cases to distinguish differences in decomposition and the environmental factors at work. Every week I felt so much exponential growth in my academic progress by actually looking at cases and practicing what I've learned in the classroom. The work environment is so friendly and helpful, I could ask as many times questions as I'd like often times spinning in to lengthy conversations about the circumstances. You will have variety if you feel that what you are assigned isn't what you're looking for. When I wasn't working on decomps I helped out the grant workers with their cases for the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) and their grant program spans into a variety of cases. Never be afraid to open up and talk to your supervisor for the internship, they're all very nice and will work with you the best that they can.”

“Interning with Metro will provide you with on the field opportunities, leadership experience, and many networking opportunities. While at Metro I was allowed to jump around to whichever division I wanted to (Community Oriented Policing, Patrol, patrol investigations, and CSI/CSA) interact with, just keep up your passion for learning, be respectful, and keep requesting your opportunities. I spent a majority of my internship with COP and got the opportunity to participate in a variety of events and tasks, at times you could be trusted to lead or be asked for your input in situations, a chance to develop your problem solving knowledge. I very much appreciated this as I had the mentorship of these officers to guide me and support me along the way. The amount of different people and agencies I got to interact with and talk to was immense; to commissioner Justin Jones, higher ups at SNHD, David Hollis one of the founding members of Thug Life, leaders within SVAC such as Cpt. Michelle Tavarez, leaders from other agencies like Summerlin Area Command and CSI. Just give it your all, have fun, and talk to everyone you can!”

I enjoyed my experience interning at the District Attorney’s Office. The District Attorney’s Office does a phenomenal job of creating an environment where interns can improve their skills and feel supported. There is a lot you can help with, from listening to recorded calls in Spanish to aiding as a law clerk for a judge during the trial. Other opportunities I did include working alongside lawyers in drafting legal writing material and assisting victim advocates in supporting victims/witnesses to a crime with court instructions and documentation. I got the chance to learn about how to present a case and the criminal justice process by observing court proceedings and trials. I also got a better understanding of how attorneys can use case law when attending the Continuing Legal Education (CLE) lectures provided by various speakers. I’m grateful for the positive connections I made along the way and how the experience strengthened my relationship with my community.

Intern at the UNLV Immigration Clinic

Being that I am interested in going to law school after receiving my Bachelor's degree but am not yet sure what type of law interests me the most, I chose an internship with the UNLV Immigration Clinic. I was taken in and accepted so kindly by all of the attorneys at the clinic. During my internship experience, I was given the opportunity to learn more about immigration law and the extensive work and research that goes into it. I was able to gain hands-on experience working with individuals in immigration proceedings, unaccompanied children and their families, assist with extensive country condition research, gain mentorship, advice, and guidance from professionals in the field, watch hearings at the Las Vegas Immigration Court, and so many other experiences which have further magnified my passion for law. I am excited to share that, during my time at the UNLV Immigration Clinic, I was offered a temporary Legal Assistant/Front Desk Receptionist job opportunity that I, very proudly, accepted. I highly recommend taking on an internship at the UNLV Immigration Clinic, as I can say, I absolutely loved it!

Intern with North Las Vegas Police Department

I decided to intern with North Las Vegas Police Bureau. I was interested in how a day to day life works for a Detective and how they solve their cases. When I arrived, I got assigned to the special victims unit and I learned how to conduct forensic interviews with children, and witnessed interviews. I got to work with police officers, children protective services and the FBI. I have made many networks and gained knowledge that I will use in my future career. I encourage everyone to get out their comfort zone and take an internship to not only know what you’re getting yourself into but also how a day in the life of a Detective looks like.

Intern with the Southern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department.

I chose to intern with Fusion Watch, an extension of the Southern Nevada Counter Terrorism Center at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, after a tour of the Center left me fascinated and intrigued to learn more about virtual crime-fighting operations. As Fusion Watch's first-ever intern, the initial period was somewhat slow in accessing the necessary databases and receiving criminal dissemination training and certifications to assist with projects. Even with this initial setback, my internship experience was all-around incredible and invaluable to my personal and professional growth. The training and certifications I have received during my internship (typically only available to law enforcement personnel) have increased my knowledge of intelligence systems and helped build up my resume. During my time at Fusion Watch, I received a first-hand look at the inner workings of a real-time crime center, observing Fusion Watch specialists utilize surveillance and advanced technology to combat crime and terrorism throughout the County. I was privileged to learn about and assist with projects on various advanced technology, such as automated license plate readers (ALPR), facial recognition software, and drone and gun-shot detection systems. My time in Fusion Watch also allowed me various opportunities I would not have otherwise had the privilege of experiencing, including a sit-along with the Communications Bureau, a ride-along with patrol and CSI, and tours of various LVMPD facilities, such as the Clark County Detention Center, the K-9 facility, the Firearms Range, and the Air Support hangar. These opportunities have been beneficial for networking and discovering civilian careers at LVMPD. I am very grateful for my internship experience and would highly recommend others to seek an internship with Fusion Watch!

Intern at the UNLV Immigration Clinic

During my time as an intern with the UNLV Immigration Clinic, I had the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in immigration law with the help of all the lovely attorneys and the legal secretary! I had the opportunity to conduct legal research and learn about country conditions and how they affect individuals seeking relief. I had the opportunity to conduct intake calls on potential clients to gather relevant information about their cases, which helped me develop client management skills and communications. I had the opportunity to attend clients’ hearings to observe the legal proceedings in immigration. In addition, I assisted an attorney with filling out USCIS documents for clients. My experience has been incredibly rewarding and has helped me professionally develop invaluable skills that will undoubtedly benefit me in my future endeavors.

During this internship, I was part of the Special Victims Unit and the Victim/Witness Assistance Center at the Clark County District Attorney's Office (CCDA). I enjoyed the plenty of hands-on experiences such as interacting with victims, attending court hearings, speaking to judges/attorneys, and becoming familiar with the court staff. Through this internship, I learned more about the criminal justice process on the side of defendants and the resources given to victims. Interns can also explore other units within the CCDA, like Homicide, Gangs, Fraud, and Victim/Witness Assistance Center. I also became more familiar with the programs that store information about a case and how to assist victims and their families. I met several wonderful individuals in this agency who were always eager to help and answer any of my questions, including victim advocates and criminal investigators. If you are interested in going to law school or a career related to the criminal justice system, I highly recommend this internship!

Intern with U.S. Marshals Service

(Fall 2022; enrolled in 3 internship credits) 

My time with the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS) was an amazing experience that allowed me to understand the many departments within this agency and how they contribute to protecting the citizens of the United States of America. Some of the assignments I completed were attending court, listening to criminal and civil matters, and monitoring video surveillance of the federal courthouse.Through my internship with the USMS, I saw firsthand how the criminal process works, from warrant and indictment to arrest, trial, federal conviction, and post-release supervision of convicted persons. I highly recommend this internship, especially if you are interested in working with a federal agency. I was able to network with many individuals from other agencies outside of the U.S. Marshals, like the FBI, DEA, U.S. Attorney’s Office, and U.S. Probation Office. Overall, this internship inspired me to find a career related to the criminal justice system in a federal agency. I thank the many individuals in the USMS who have assisted me in applying for federal jobs and their mentorship.

Intern with Real Talk

I had an awesome experience interning at Real Talk Youth Impact Program with Sheree Corniel. I was able to express and improve my talents in grant writing as I was able to write several grants while there in approved awards for more than $18,000. I enjoyed improving in program management, case management and community engagement. I love working with youth especially at risk youth and helping to steer and divert them to success no matter what their situations may be, Real Talk YIP was a great place to grow. I have my own nonprofits Transitioning Boys Into Men and Las Vegas NSBE Jr. a junior engineering, S.T.E.A.M, robotics, criminal justice topics and job training programs. I believe Criminal Justice starts with our youth, informing them and giving them the tools for success young is key. The UNLV Criminal Justice internship program, Dr. Bejinariu and staff are phenomenal, and I want to thank you all for this amazing experience, I am definitely looking forward to more internship experiences with you all in the future.

Intern with University Police Services at UNLV

I joined the University Police Services because I was interested in how the work environment operates within an occupation that I may incorporate myself towards one day in law enforcement. Everyone at the UPD is so welcoming to work alongside with and the tasks I was assigned were accommodating to the skills I currently had prior to joining. It is certainly a place of teamwork where everyone coincides with one another when regarding issues that may arise and solutions to solve and help fellow students and faculty on campus. Overall I am glad to have become an intern for the UPD and it was the best decision I made during the course of my college experience when figuring out ways to gain work-related skills! Thank you again to the University Police Services for accepting my internship and for being a place that allowed me to view instances of evidence processing, a ride-long to see the activity that a UPD officer undergoes from a day-to-day basis at the UNLV campus, and having me work on diligent tasks to expand my abilities and knowledge of the law enforcement field in criminal justice!

Intern with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Forensic Laboratory

(Summer 2023, enrolled in 6 internship credits)

I was an intern for the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department’s Forensic Laboratory as a part of the Latent Prints Detail. During my time at the forensics lab, I assisted in performing a validation for the laboratory’s new Vacuum Metal Deposition instrument. I was able to practice many of the skills I have learned in my chemistry labs during this process, including clearly recording, interpreting, and reporting data. I was also able to sit in with other details in the forensics lab and go on a ride along with one of the crime scene analysts. This experience was extremely valuable in giving me an insight into how the forensic process works and how critical it is for all parties to work together on a given case.
Job Prospects:
I was invited to apply for a part-time lab assistant position with the DNA detail at the end of my internship, which I will be taking after the completion of my application/backgrounds process.

Intern with the North Las Vegas Police Department

Interning with the North Las Vegas Police Department has taught me so much in the short time I've been there. I am getting invaluable hands-on experience both working with the community and with the department itself. I have been going back and forth between working directly with the public to working on logging information into their systems for record keeping. I have also had the opportunity to go on two ride alongs during my time here, one with a police officer and the other with a CSI. Both were incredible experiences that I will never forget. The things I've learned will serve me in both my life and future career. I would absolutely recommend taking an internship to any student who's interested!
