In the UNLV Department of Communication Studies (COM) there are faculty members (and their students) who conduct social-scientific research studies. Through their work, students have opportunities to accrue research credits, which may count as course credit or extra credit in COM classes. Students may earn credit in two ways:

  • Participate in research studies.
  • Complete an alternative assignment for research credit.

Students

Please consult your course syllabi for information about how many research credits your instructor is requiring or providing in a given semester. All students who are currently taking COM 101, 102, 104, 211, and 212 are required to complete one credit of research participation for their course. Using the SONA link above you will be able to create an account using Single Sign On (SSO) with your UNLV information. You are encouraged to create an account early on in the semester so you can receive alerts when studies are available. In place of participation in a study you may complete the alternative assignment option as well, which you can obtain through creating a SONA account and selecting the alternative assignment for your course. Below are key dates to keep in mind for the current semester. If you have any questions, please contact the coordinator above.

For Fall 2023

  • All research credits, including the alternative credit option, must be completed by Monday, November 20th at 5:00 p.m.
  • Please note studies may conclude earlier than these dates as they reach capacity for participation; do not wait for the last minute if you are in need of credit(s).

If you dispute the credits displayed online, please contact the Research Participation Coordinator first before speaking with your instructor.
