Individuals who already have a master’s degree in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and meet the admissions qualifications will be allowed to take courses as an advanced graduate certificate-seeking student.

The online Advanced Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nurse Practitioner program uses a variety of teaching strategies designed to actively engage students. Mandatory orientation sessions are held before the beginning of each spring semester to enhance the connections among students and with the nursing faculty. This certificate has mandatory on-campus sessions. Program start is contingent on class size.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Competently perform medical screening examinations for emergency patients across the lifespan with unforeseen illness or injury of varying complexity.
  2. Demonstrate proficiency in medical decision making and differential diagnoses formulation for emergency patients across the lifespan with unforeseen illness or injury of varying complexity.
  3. Develop, implement and evaluate patient management plans for emergency patients across the lifespan with unforeseen illness or injury of varying complexity.
  4. Analyze patient data to determine appropriate and timely patient disposition including admission, discharge, observation, or transfer of emergency patients across the lifespan with unforeseen illness or injury of varying complexity.
  5. Apply professional, legal and ethical practice standards in the evaluation and management of emergency patients across the lifespan with unforeseen illness or injury of varying complexity.
  6. Articulate an understanding of the role of the Emergency Nurse Practitioner as a member of the interdisciplinary emergency healthcare team as well as patient care and department leader.

Individuals who already have a master's degree in nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner and meet the admissions qualifications will be allowed to take courses towards the Post-Master's Advanced Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nurse Practitioner upon admissions into the program. A certificate will be awarded documenting completion of the coursework and transcripts will reflect courses taken.

All applicants must review and follow the Graduate College Admission and Registration Requirements. 

Students must apply and submit all admission materials via the Grad Rebel Gateway system available through the Graduate College. The following items are required:

  1. Official transcripts of all coursework for both baccalaureate and master's degrees must be sent to the School of Nursing and Graduate College. Master's transcripts must show coursework in Family Nurse Practitioner curriculum with the conferral of a Master of Science in Nursing degree from a program fully accredited by National League of Nursing (NLN) and/or American Association Colleges of Nursing (AACN.) The accrediting body for NLN is ACEN and the accrediting body for the American Association Colleges of Nursing is CCNE. GPA of 3.0 or above
  2. Current valid unencumbered and unrestricted RN and APRN licensure in the state of residence.
  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification, and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Certification.
  4. National board certification or eligibility through the American Nurse Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) as a Family Nurse Practitioner. For board eligible applicants, completion of the FNP program must have been within the previous 6 months. Achievement and verification of FNP board certification will be required prior to completion of the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nurse Practitioner.
  5. Three letters of recommendation from either instructors or employers that speak to the applicant's potential to complete the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nurse Practitioner Program.
  6. A statement describing the students' professional goals and the reason for seeking the Advanced Graduate Certificate in Emergency Nurse Practitioner.
  7. Current Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV).
  8. Interview may be required.
  9. Signed letter of attestation regarding FNP Board Certification Eligibility. Please refer to Section C: Documents and Downloads of the Degrees Directory program page for form.

Certificate Requirements

Completion of a minimum of 15 credit hours with a minimum GPA of 3.00.

Plan Certificate Completion Requirements

Students may apply for graduation up to two semesters prior to completing their degree requirements. All required forms must be submitted to the graduate college via the Grad Rebel Gateway.
