Ombuds Day is an annual day of recognition for the ombuds profession organized by the American Bar Association Section of Dispute Resolution. This year, the theme of Ombuds Day is "Exploring Options to Resolve Conflict Together."
To raise awareness of the Ombuds Office on campus, and to celebrate the work that ombuds do worldwide, UNLV's Ombuds Office is hosting a week of activities that illustrate the broad range of ways that the office can assist with informal conflict resolution.
On Monday, October 11, stop by the Ombuds Office (FDH 165) for an open house and learn more about the services the Ombuds can provide for you and your office/department/unit. Refreshments will be served, and you can drop your business card to be entered in a raffle to win a number of exciting prizes.
The office will be open to the public (and not accepting individual appointments) between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
On Tuesday, October 12, from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., join us to talk about the Netflix dramedy The Chair.
In a group discussion moderated by Dr. Anne Stevens (chair of the Department of Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies), we will talk about the show’s depiction of department politics, campus issues, interpersonal conflict, and the challenges facing faculty at all stages of their careers. Everyone in attendance is invited to share their thoughts as part of the conversation, so if you’ve been looking for a chance to talk about the show, this is it.
This will be a hybrid, RebelFlex style discussion. Join us in person at the Faculty Center (BEH 235) or on Zoom.
Please register for the event here.
On Thursday, October 14, UNLV’s Ombuds Office, in cooperation with the Faculty Center, is hosting an interactive role play exercise at the Faculty Center.
Prior to the 75-minute session, registrants will complete an online survey instrument that will provide insight into their own conflict style. With this knowledge in hand, participants will explore the impact that different styles can exacerbate and de-escalate conflict by taking part in two role play sessions.
There will be two sessions held at the Faculty Center (BEH 235). One begins at 10:00 a.m., and the other at 2:30 p.m.
To register, please follow this link.
On Friday, October 15, from noon to 2.pm., join the Ombuds Office, in collaboration with Tina Vo (Teaching and Learning), in a mid-day game break. Play one or all of four fast-paced, quick-play board games in which players cooperate, collaborate, and compete.
This event will be held at the Faculty Center (BEH 235).
No experience? No problem! Dr. Vo will be on hand to explain the rules, and UNLV Ombuds David G. Schwartz will be available to explain how the games fit in with this year’s Ombuds Day theme, “Exploring Options to Resolve Conflict Together.”
As always, the Ombuds Office is available to serve all UNLV employees. To speak with the Ombuds, please visit the appointment page.
