Dear UNLV students,
My heart breaks for those grappling with the devastating aftermath of the recent wildfires in Maui. I have been thinking a lot the past week about everyone affected by this immeasurable tragedy, including the many members of our UNLV community who reside throughout Hawaii, or who have families and homes in the area.
Words alone can't begin to describe the pain and hurt that so many are experiencing right now, as recovery efforts continue following one of the deadliest U.S. wildfires in more than a century.
It is during these trying times that we need to lean on and support one another, both with our words and our actions. I am so proud of the UNLV Polynesian student organization, the 'Ewalu Club, for its proactive leadership to support relief efforts in the region over the past week.
For our students who have been directly impacted by this tragedy, please know that we’re here for you.
- The UNLV Support Team can help connect students in need with university resources, including financial assistance, basic needs, mental health and academic support.
- The Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) office is prioritizing crisis services for impacted Hawaiian students, or those seeking counseling and support related to the tragedy. Students can call 702-895-3627 or visit the CAPS website.
UNLV is a strong community with rich and proud ties to Maui and all of Hawaii. During this time, please reach out to your fellow students and friends who may be affected, and let them know you’re here for them. Now and in the weeks to come, the UNLV family will remain steadfast in its support of our impacted students and colleagues, and our thoughts are with the community of Lahaina, the island of Maui, and all of Hawaii.
Warm regards,
Keith E. Whitfield, Ph.D.
