Dear University Community,

Over the past week, a number of policy changes proposed at the federal level have led to uncertainty within higher education and have generated anxiety for some. This includes ongoing conversations related to immigration and the future of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.

As I’ve shared previously, every student should be able to pursue their goals and seek opportunities to improve their lives through higher education. DACA and undocumented students are valued members of our university and our community, and we will continue to support them and advocate for them while adhering to applicable laws.

The university has resources for those in need. For example, the UNLV Immigration Clinic’s University Legal Services program, part of the Boyd School of Law, offers free immigration legal services, including DACA assistance, to current students, staff, and their families. The clinic also helps students and others navigate immigration laws and processes.

At UNLV, we will continue to focus our efforts on supporting our students on their higher education journey – be it through academic and research experiences, mental health and wellness services, career development and financial literacy, or cultural and athletic pursuits.

We strive to create an environment where all of our students can thrive, and where our faculty and staff can deliver impactful teaching, research, and service for the benefit of our students and our community. We’ll continue to analyze any forthcoming policy changes and monitor their potential impact on our university.

I am grateful for the leadership of NSHE and the Board of Regents on this issue. Chancellor Charlton has asked institutions to share a message on behalf of NSHE regarding its support for the system's diverse campus communities, and you can view that message here

Warm regards,

Keith E. Whitfield, Ph.D.
