Following a national search, UNLV has selected David W. Hatchett, Ph.D., as Vice President for Research. Serving as interim vice president since October 2022, Hatchett brings extensive experience and a solid vision for growing UNLV’s research enterprise. His new position will begin on June 1, 2024.

Since joining the Division of Research in 2016, Hatchett has played a key role in advancing research infrastructure and resources. His achievements during his interim tenure include completing a strategic plan for the Division of Research, establishing a joint appointment agreement with Los Alamos National Laboratory, contributing to funded NSF Engines proposals, and crucial enhancements such as launching the Office of Clinical Trials and reorganizing the Office of Research Infrastructure.

Executive Vice President and Provost Chris L. Heavey commended Hatchett’s vision and leadership. “For years, David has been at the center of our research operations, proving himself as a leader who is both dedicated and highly capable,” Heavey noted. “His extensive experience and knowledge of UNLV’s inner workings as well as the state and national research landscape position him ideally to advance our research agenda."

Under Hatchett’s leadership, UNLV aims to support the growth of research areas of existing strength as well as in emerging fields. These efforts are aligned with regional economic needs and global challenges, aiming to make a significant impact through both applied and basic research.  

Hatchett expressed enthusiasm about the path ahead. “It is an honor to have this opportunity to lead such a dedicated team that is committed to making a difference through impactful research. I am excited to continue advancing UNLV’s mission and to foster an environment that supports innovation and discovery,” he stated.

During the campus interviews, Hatchett conveyed a vision for the Division of Research that includes enhancing interdisciplinary collaborations across various fields such as health sciences, engineering, and digital technologies, expanding industry partnerships, investing in facilities and technology, and supporting efforts in the social sciences, arts, and humanities. His strategic initiatives aim to boost UNLV’s reputation as a pioneering institution that pushes the boundaries of research and scholarship.

President Keith E. Whitfield further highlighted the strategic importance of Hatchett’s role at UNLV. “David’s track record and vision are vital for our ongoing efforts to elevate UNLV’s research profile. His ongoing leadership will ensure we remain competitive in a rapidly evolving academic landscape,” Whitfield remarked.

Hatchett's academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Physical and Analytical Chemistry from the University of Utah and a bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from California State University, Stanislaus. An accomplished researcher, he has authored dozens of research publications, holds three patents, and has garnered substantial grant funding. He remains active in multiple professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society and the Electrochemical Society.
