Open call for essay proposals

Proposals due 5 p.m., April 14, 2025

For the Fall 2025 issue of our Dry Heat publication we want to highlight individual artworks. Please send us proposals for essays that center on a single work of art.

What are we looking for?

  • the proposed essay should be about 1500-2000 words long.
  • the artwork should be associated with Southern Nevada in some way. This could mean that it was made by an artist who lives in Southern Nevada, or that it was made by an artist who used Southern Nevada as a theme, or that the artist was raised in Southern Nevada and their background has influenced the work in a convincing way, etc.
  • your tone can be academic, lyrical, historical, critical, or whatever works best for you. You are invited to discuss the context of the artwork, the history behind it, aspects of the artist’s practice that led them to create it, or anything else that seems relevant. You can use your focus on the artwork as a springboard leading to a discussion of related ideas. (Think of Rosalind Krauss moving from an investigation of Rodin's The Gates of Hell into into a discussion of repetition, copying, and so on, in “The Originality of the Avant Garde.")  Please be ambitious.

Your proposal should include

  • an outline of the artwork and the way you will approach it.
  • a 200-word sample of your writing
  • a bio, CV, or something about yourself so we know who you are.

Please send your proposal to deanne.sole@unlv.edu by 5 p.m., Monday, April 14, 2025. Four writers will be selected for the issue. Finished essays will be due on Monday, July 7, and the writers will receive $325 each. Dry Heat issue 7 will be published in fall 2025.
