4 p.m. - 6 p.m.
Join us on Tuesday, April 29, for an afternoon with Dr. Estevan Rael-Gálvez.
Rael-Gálvez will detail the digital repository that he is creating centered on the lives of enslaved Indigenous people across the Americas. He'll explain how descendants, educators, scholars, artists, and storytellers can use the collection, and show how it holds potential for transcendence and healing. The talk will be followed by a reception with light refreshments.
Estevan Rael-Gálvez, Ph.D., is executive director of Native Bound Unbound: Archive of Indigenous Slavery, an initiative funded by the Mellon Foundation, leading a global team to document Indigenous slavery across the Americas. Trained as an anthropologist, historian, and scholar of slavery, Rael-Gálvez has served as senior vice president at the National Trust for Historic Preservation, executive director of the National Hispanic Cultural Center, and state historian of New Mexico. A native son of New Mexico, Rael-Gálvez was raised on a farm and ranch stewarded by his family for generations. He received his BA in English Literature and Ethnic Studies from the University of California, Berkeley, and his MA and Ph.D. in American Cultures from the University of Michigan.
This free talk is sponsored by the Harry Reid Endowed Chair for the History of the Intermountain West, the UNLV History Department, Interdisciplinary, Gender, and Ethnic Studies Department, English Department, and Anthropology Department. About the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art
The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art believes everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that holds space for us all. Located on the campus of one of the most racially diverse universities in the U.S., we strive to create a nourishing environment for those who continue to be neglected by contemporary art museums. As the only art museum in the city of Las Vegas, we commit ourselves to leveling barriers that limit access to the arts. Our collection of artworks offers an opportunity for everyone to develop a deeper knowledge of contemporary art in Southern Nevada. The Barrick Museum is part of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
