Discover the intricate beauty of plants in this drawing workshop with artist, curator, and educator Kim Garrison Means. Means is part of the team behind the Mystery Ranch, a desert-based art residency and ecology research station within the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument. In this workshop she’ll show you how to observe and document the details of the botanical world around us.

"In this workshop," she writes, "we will appreciate nature's beautiful biological forms as we deeply observe local plants using the contour drawing method. We'll learn to connect our eyes, minds, hands and breath to create slow, flowing, single lines and record intricate details, while practicing the idea of drawing as an exercise in non-judgmental curiosity—a journey that brings us closer to nature and to ourselves. Participants will start by drawing with pencil on paper, then learn to refine their drawings with technical pens, colored media and a variety of style options.”

This botanical drawing workshop will be open daily at the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art from April 9-12, 2025. Each session runs from 12–4 p.m. but you can arrive and leave at any time. Materials are provided by the Marjorie Barrick Museum. Guests of all ages are welcome. All skill levels can participate and no previous drawing experience is required.

This workshop is part of the Marjorie Barrick Museum’s By-Hand How-To, a series of creative and restful events that will manifest almost every month until June 2025.The project is supported, in part, by the Nevada Arts Council, a state agency, which receives support from the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency, and the state of Nevada.

About the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art
The Marjorie Barrick Museum of Art believes everyone deserves access to art that challenges our understanding of the present and inspires us to create a future that holds space for us all. Located on the campus of one of the most racially diverse universities in the U.S., we strive to create a nourishing environment for those who continue to be neglected by contemporary art museums. As the only art museum in the city of Las Vegas, we commit ourselves to leveling barriers that limit access to the arts. Our collection of artworks offers an opportunity for everyone to develop a deeper knowledge of contemporary art in Southern Nevada. The Barrick Museum is part of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
