Future engineers and computer scientists connected with local industry leaders last week. The College of Engineering held the Engineering Career Mixer on Oct. 15, providing an opportunity for 460 students and nearly 70 companies to network at the Advanced Engineering Building.

The companies tabling included both public entities such as NV Energy and Southwest Gas, as well as private companies from construction contractors like Anning-Johnson Co. to design firms like WSP. Students had the opportunity to connect with a variety of employers, gaining insight into the diverse career paths their UNLV degrees can open up.

“At first, I was worried I wouldn’t be able to find a company that fit my degree and interests,” said mechanical and entertainment engineering student Makayla Atkins. “But now that I’m here and I’ve talked to a few recruiters, I realize the real issue will be choosing just one.” 

But the mixer was more than just an opportunity to meet recruiters.Career Services hosted multiple resume review workshops to help students prepare for both the mixer and UNLV’s Fall Career and Internship Fair, which was held the following day. In addition to polishing their resumes, mixer attendees had the chance to spruce up their LinkedIn profiles by signing up for a professional portrait.

“Several students told me they have a follow-up interview already scheduled,” said Aya Al-Najjar, career services and internship coordinator for the College of Engineering. “The college very much appreciates the time and effort our employer partners took to engage with our students, share insights about their organizations, and discuss potential job openings. Their support plays a crucial role in helping our students prepare for their future careers.”
