UNLV’s Office of International Programs has coordinated a special 5-week study abroad experience in Viterbo, Italy, featuring a course taught by HC Professor Heather Lusty. This is a rare opportunity to earn the equivalent of 6 HON credits while immersing yourself in a new culture and creating unforgettable memories (please note: students wishing to earn the equivalent of 6 HON credits will need to work with their HC advisor to submit an additional course petition). This program is open to Honors College students from across the United States.

  • Application Deadline: March 15, 2025

Costs and Extra Scholarship Funds Reserved for Viterbo

The overall cost of this 5-week summer program in Viterbo can vary based on living preferences, travel arrangements, etc. You can find more information about costs on USAC’s Viterbo page for 2025 Summer Session I, including an interactive budget sheet which provides a detailed breakdown of all possible costs.

To offset costs, we strongly encourage you to apply for a number of scholarships. UNLV’s Office for International Programs has kindly shared a list of Study Abroad Scholarship Opportunities, many of which are applicable to this Viterbo summer program. An updated list of scholarships will be posted on the International Programs website by the new year.

In addition, USAC will award the first 10 UNLV Honors student applicants who sign up and enroll in Dr. Lusty’s course a $1,000 scholarship. There may also be future scholarship opportunities during International Education Week. Look for announcements about this in early November.

The City & the Program

Viterbo has kept a fascinating historical record of its past better than almost any place in Italy. Protected by a medieval wall, Viterbo’s fountains, palaces, and churches all exemplify its glorious and eventful heritage of art and culture. You’ll study at Università degli Studi della Tuscia. With over 10,000 local and international students, the university enjoys a close association with Viterbo, giving it a vibrant atmosphere often associated with university towns.

You will get to experience this within the shared community of Honors College students from UNLV and Honors students across the U.S. if you take Professor Lusty’s HON 420 course.

For living accommodations, students will share private apartments in Viterbo, or may apply for a homestay opportunity to live with a local Italian or an Italian family. Homestays are limited and not guaranteed.

Students will be able to get around the city by walking and taking local transportation.

How to Apply

Begin your online application to USAC’s Viterbo program. Once you receive access to USAC’s online Gateway Account, you’ll be able to complete the “preliminary course registration form” and select “Art Crime: Looting and Restitution” as your first choice. You will be asked to select two alternate courses.

At any point in the application or planning stages you can contact the Office of International Programs at ip.advising@unlv.edu for support. Please let us know that you are an Honors student interested in the Viterbo Summer Session I program.

Remember, the application deadline is March 15, 2025

We hope you will take advantage of this incredible opportunity to study abroad in Viterbo, Italy!
