Beverly Jacobik, MPA, CIP, is the new Research Protections Director in the Office of Research Integrity. Beverly comes to UNLV from the University of Memphis where she was a research compliance administrator providing oversight to human subjects and animal research, research misconduct, export controls, and financial conflict of interest programs.  She also spent significant time in Maryland and Massachusetts before making her way to Las Vegas.

She started in ORI as an IRB administrator working remotely from northern Mississippi before transitioning to her current role eight months later. Beverly is focused on research integrity and ethical conduct with human (IRB) and animal (IACUC) research subjects.

She has a Liberal Arts degree with a science concentration from Harvard University and an MPA from the University of Memphis.

In her new position, Beverly gladly relocated to Vegas. In her first 90 days on the job she is meeting with Associate Deans for Research, PIs and Chairs across campus, and reviewing policies and procedures. She also provides resources for researchers and is the person they can reach out to for regulatory analysis and interpretation.

Please join us in welcoming Office of Sponsored Programs Pre-Award Research Administrator, Maureen AJ Smith, MSc, MA. Maureen will be working with the College of Liberal Arts, College of Fine Arts, Division of Diversity Initiatives, Division of Student Affairs, Greenspun College of Urban Affairs, Lee Business School, Libraries, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, Office of the Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs, William F. Harrah College of Hospitality, and William S. Boyd School of Law. 

Maureen comes to research administration from an academic and non-profit organization background. Prior to joining UNLV, she managed collections and exhibitions at two Memphis-area museums and served as a Pre-Award Coordinator at the University of Memphis, where she provided department-level support to the Department of Psychology and the Institute for Intelligent Systems.

Maureen holds a master’s of science in Medieval History from the University of Edinburgh and a master’s of art in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester. She is a certified State Archivist in the state of Tennessee. Her academic specialties include the history of religion and witchcraft and the interpretation of objects associated with human remains in museums.

Joanna Simmons, B.S., is the new Office of Research Integrity (ORI) Research Protections Program Coordinator. In her role, Joanna oversees several programs including compensation for human subjects research participants, PI eligibility, and manages day-to-day operations of the Research Protections program. She is the liaison between the UNLV researchers, the IRB Boards, and the ORI IRB team.

Joanna comes to research administration from an academic and U.S. Air Force Administration background. Prior to joining UNLV, she managed a $25K travel budget, a 200-member AF unit, processing all personnel actions including evaluations, decorations, and extensive commander and leadership support. Before her military career Joanna worked at East Tennessee State University and Colorado Mesa University in the IRB and Grants and Contract administration.

Joanna has a BS in Early Childhood Development with a minor in Early Childhood Education from Milligan University in Northeast Tennessee.

She grew up in Asheville, NC where she enjoyed hiking in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. When it cools down she likes hiking at Valley of Fire and Red Rocks near Las Vegas. After a successful military career, Joanna is excited to return to human subjects research administration here at UNLV.
