Updated Principal Investigator Eligibility (PIE) Policy
Updated Principal Investigator Eligibility (PIE) Policy
Jul. 20, 2023
The revised policy will allow greater access to those seeking to engage in sponsored program activities, research requiring approval from compliance/ethics boards, and clinical trials. The policy expands PI eligibility and creates a pathway to PI status for collaborators.
Please check out the PI website with the new policy and forms.
Updates to the policy include:
An expansion of the positions/roles that are granted automatic PI status. Under the old policy many researchers had to file for an exemption to receive PI status.
For those who do not automatically qualify as a PI, the revised policy clearly identifies the process and forms that need to be completed to request PI status. The exception forms are available on the Division of Research PI website. All forms and attachments must be submitted as one complete pdf file to PIE@unlv.edu.
Approval of PI eligibility granted under the exception process is valid in perpetuity until position/title change, separation from UNLV, or as per the indicated expiration date on the PI Eligibility Request Form.
Uncompensated community collaborators can now seek PI status through the volunteer individual investigator mechanism.
The ultimate decision regarding PI eligibility exceptions resides with the Vice President for Research (or designee in their absence). No other individual on campus is allowed to provide this designation and exceptions may also be revoked by the Vice President for Research at his/her discretion.
