The Division of Research is pleased to announce Gwen Marchand, Ph.D. as the Associate Vice President for Research (AVPR). An accomplished researcher with extensive experience in grant acquisition and management, Marchand brings a proven track record of leadership and innovation to this key administrative role.
In her capacity as AVPR, Marchand will oversee the Office of Research Integrity (ORI), Office of Sponsored Programs (OSP), and Office of Clinical Trials (OCT). Her experience will support UNLV’s efforts to enhance research capabilities, encourage interdisciplinary collaboration, and develop initiatives that support the university’s mission as a Carnegie R1 research institution.
During her 18 months as interim AVPR, Marchand worked with campus partners and administrators in the research division to identify gaps and challenges in research services and support, which led to improvements in the responsiveness and efficiency of the restructured Office of Research Integrity (ORI).
She also supported Vice President for Research David Hatchett and the division in completing a strategic plan for UNLV’s research enterprise, engaging diverse stakeholders to create a broad vision for research development.
Hatchett noted Marchand’s effective collaboration across departments, saying, “With Dr. Marchand guiding these critical areas, we expect to see continued improvements in the support we provide our researchers. Her contributions as interim AVPR have already strengthened our research infrastructure.”
Hatchett also highlighted Marchand’s knowledge of scholarship within the social sciences. “She helps to complement the expertise that already exists in the division,” he stated. “We have a team in place that is ready to support researchers of all disciplines and foster the development of interdisciplinary research initiatives.”
Marchand joined UNLV in 2008 as an assistant professor of educational psychology in the College of Education and was promoted to a full professor in 2021. While in the College of Education, she served as Director of the UNLV Center for Research, Evaluation, and Assessment (CREA) and also as Associate Dean for Research and Sponsored Projects. Her diverse roles have prepared her well to lead efforts to grow research resources and opportunities.
Reflecting on her new position, Marchand said, “I am very excited to continue supporting our dynamic research community here at UNLV. It’s a privilege to help advance the innovative projects our faculty, staff, and students are involved in, and I look forward to building on our existing foundation to enhance research services and partnerships.”
Marchand holds a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Rockhurst College, a master’s degree in Psychology from Portland State University, and a Ph.D. in Systems Science (Psychology) also from Portland State. She was recently selected for the national APLU Council on Research (COR) Research Leader Fellowship Program.
Please join us in welcoming Gwen Marchand to her new role as AVPR, where she will continue to work with division colleagues in advancing UNLV’s research agenda.
