On February 20, at 7:30 PM, the Artemus W. Ham Concert Hall transformed into a vibrant stage of global artistry during the 2025 UNLV Lunar New Year Concert. Directed by Tianxi Wen—a dedicated doctoral candidate in orchestral conducting, conductor, Yangqin performer, and one of the concert’s composers—the evening was a groundbreaking celebration of cultural diversity and creative collaboration.
The night opened with an inspiring speech from ethnomusicologist Dr. Richard Miller, followed by warm wishes from Provost Chris Heavey. The program was divided into two captivating halves. In the first half, the Ensemble led an immersive performance that combined mesmerizing instrumental pieces with powerful collaborations in voice, Kung Fu, and classical dance. All music is meticulously arranged by the UNLV World Music Chamber Ensemble composers. The second half expanded the experience further, featuring graceful classical dance, a chic Chinese costume fashion show, a stirring choir performance, tai chi paired with the elegant sounds of the Guzheng, and a couple of solo and duet performances by Ensemble musicians.
This spectacular event showcased the talents of over 100 performers, including the accomplished musicians of the UNLV World Music Chamber Ensemble and a range of co-performers from Happy Face Dance Studio, Argenta Choir, Las Vegas Modern Kung Fu, and the Shaolin Tai Chi Heritage Center. The evening was also graced by community luminaries such as erhu and Chinese wind instrument soloist Hong Wang and Tai Chi Master Chang Yuan.
As the founder and director of this one-of-a-kind ensemble—blending Western and non-Western instruments for an experience never before seen in Las Vegas—Tianxi Wen expressed immense pride in the concert’s success. The UNLV annual Lunar New Year Concert not only celebrated cultural diversity but also fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation of global artistic traditions.
In recognition of their dedication to cultural harmony and artistic excellence, the UNLV World Music Chamber Ensemble, the 2025 Lunar New Year Concert, and Tianxi Wen were honored with a proclamation from Mayor Shelley Berkley. This accolade stands as a testament to the collaborative spirit and creative brilliance that illuminated the evening.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to all the performers, supporters, and community members who made this night unforgettable. Here’s to many more celebrations of art, culture, and unity! View more photos by Tonatiuh Gomez-Aramburo.
