Students and staff members with the UNLV Cyber Clinic had the opportunity to attend multiple cybersecurity conferences in June, one of the benefits of being a clinic member. The first was the National Initiative for Cybersecurity Education (NICE) Conference & Expo that took place in Dallas, Texas. The conference brought together community members and thought leaders from education, government, industry, and nonprofits to explore ways of developing a skilled cybersecurity workforce ready to meet the challenges of the future. 

Computer Science Professor and UNLV Cyber Clinic Director, Yoohwan Kim, and Cyber Clinic Coordinator, Mehdi Abid presented “Working with Cyber Clinic Clients” during the NICE pre-conference, Workshop on Building a Sustainable Cybersecurity Clinic in Higher Education. 

Nearly 10 students were also invited to attend and volunteer at the Cyber Civil Defense Summit (CCDS) as representatives of the UNLV Cyber Clinic. Taking place in Washington, D.C. at the International Spy Museum, the CCDS is hosted annually by the Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity at the University of California, Berkeley, to bring together cyber defenders from all sectors.

Cyber Clinic members learned from and networked with speakers ranging from students and faculty across multiple colleges, cybersecurity professionals, and government officials, gaining valuable contacts and insights along the way. 

Thanks to multiple funding sources, active clinic members in good standing who are selected to attend conferences can have all their entrance and travel fees covered by the Cyber Clinic.

Later in summer nearly 20 students will participate in the Department of Energy’s DOE Cybersecurity and Technology Innovation Conference taking place in Dallas, Texas, and more than 50 will be able to attend DEFCON right here in Las Vegas, Nevada.
