The UNLV Cyber Clinic (https://freecyberclinic.org/), led by Computer Science Professors Juyeon Jo and Yoohwan Kim, recently received a $6,450 donation from AT&T to support the students and efforts of the Clinic.
Established over three years ago, the UNLV Cyber Clinic works to create the foundation for tomorrow’s cybersecurity professionals while assisting local small businesses with their cybersecurity needs through free educational and assessment services.
According to Cyberseek.com, there are more than 550,000 cybersecurity-related jobs open across the nation. In addition to classroom learning and technical skills, today’s employers are looking for hires to have practical experience and be well versed in soft skills. That is where the Clinic shines. Numbering more than 100 dedicated students, the UNLV Cyber Clinic is set up like a business, with multiple departments and opportunities for students to gain valuable hands-on experience working with actual clients. Clinic students meet with small business owners, identify important assets, analyze vulnerabilities and recommend controls to improve the business’s security.
While the Clinic has received grants from funders including the National Security Agency (NSA), Small Business Administration (SBA) and Google’s Cybersecurity Clinics Fund, there are many costs not covered by these sources and currently incurred by students. Specifically, supply and travel costs for students to visit and assist their small business clients.
This latest donation from AT&T, a follow-up to their 2023 donation of $20,000 to the Clinic, will enable students to assist even more small businesses while they gain the in-demand technical and soft skills needed to become tomorrow’s cybersecurity professionals.
